Câu hỏi 1 :

In this era of increased global warming and diminishing fossil fuel supplies, we must begin to put a greater priority on harnessing alternative energy sources. Fortunately, there are a number of readily available, renewable resources that are both cost-effective and earth-friendly. Two such resources are solar power and geothermal power.          Solar energy, which reaches the earth through sunlight, is so abundant that it could meet the needs of worldwide energy consumption 6,000 times over. And solar energy is easily harnessed through the use of photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into electricity. In theUnited States alone, more than 100,000 homes are equipped with solar electric systems in the form of solar panels or solar roof tiles. And in other parts of the world, including many developing countries, the use of solar systems is growing steadily.          Another alternative energy source, which is abundant in specific geographical areas, is geothermal power, which creates energy by tapping heat from below the surface of the earth. Hot water and steam that are trapped in underground pools are pumped to the surface and used to run a generator, which produces electricity. Geothermal energy is 50,000 times more abundant than the entire known supply og fossil fuel resources. And as with solar power, the technology needed to utilize geothermal energy is fairly simple. A prime example of effective geothermal use is inIceland, a region of high geothermal activity, where over 80 percent of private homes are heated by geothermal power.          Solar and geothermal energy are just two of a number of promising renewable alternatives to conventional energy sources. The time is long overdue to invest in the development and use of alternative energy on a global scale. What is the main topic of this passage?

A The benefits of solar and wind power over conventional energy sources.

B How energy resources are tapped from nature.

C Two types of alternative energy sources that should be further utilized

D Examples of the use of energy sources worldwide.

Câu hỏi 2 :

Crows are probably the  most frequently met and easily identifiable members of the native fauna of the United States. The great number of tales, legends, and myths about these bird indicates that people have been exceptionally interested in them for a long time. On the other hand, when it comes to substantive(quan trọng/ real)-particularly behavioural-information, crows are less well known than many comparably common species and for that matter, not a few quite uncommon ones: The endangered California condor, to cite one obvious example. There are practical reasons for this.          Crows are notoriously poor and aggravating subjects for field research. Keen observers and quick learners, they are astute about the intentions of other creatures, including researchers, and adept at avoiding them. Because they are so numerous, active, and monochromatic, it is difficult to distinguish one crow from another. Bands, radio transmitters, or other identifying devices can be attached to them, but this of course requires catching live crows, who are among the wariest and most untrappable of birds.          Technical difficulties aside, crow research is daunting because the ways of these birds are so complex and various. As pre-eminent generalists, members of this species ingeniously exploit a great range of habitats and resources, and they can quickly adjust to changes in their circumstances. Being so educable, individual birds have markedly different interests and inclinations, strategies and scams. For example, one pet crow learned how to let a dog out of its kennel by pulling the pin on the door. When the dog escaped, the bird went into the kennel and ate its food. What is the main topic of the passage?

A The ways in which crows differ from other common birds.

B The myths and legends about crows.

C The characteristics that make crows difficult to study.

D The existing methods for investigating crow behaviour.

Câu hỏi 3 :

Telecommunicating is some form of computer communication between employees’ homes and offices and offices. For employees whose jobs involve sitting at a terminal or word processor entering data or typing reports, the location of the computer is of no consequence. If  the machine can communicate over telephone lines, when the work is completed, employees can dial the office computer from a distant site and transmit the material to their employers. A recent survey in USA Today estimates that there are approximately 8.7 million telecommuters. But although the numbers are rising annually, the trend does not appear to be as significant as predicted when Business Week published “The Portable Executive” as its cover story a few years ago. Why hasn’t telecommuting become more popular?          Clearly, change simply takes time. But in addition, there has been active resistance on the part of many managers. These executives claim that supervising the telecommuters in a large work force scattered across the country would be too difficult, or, at least, systems for managing them are not yet developed, thereby complicating the manager’s responsibilities.          It is also true that employees who are given the option of telecommuting are often reluctant to accept the opportunity. Most people fell that they need regular interaction with a group, and many are concerned that they will not have the same consideration for advancement if they are not more visible in the office setting. Some people feel that even when a space in their homes is set aside as a work area, they never really get away from the office. Which of the following is the main topic of the passage?

A The advantages of telecommuting

B A definition of telecommuting

C An overview of telecommuting

D The failure of telecommuting

Câu hỏi 5 :

According to the passage, why should we consider using alternative energy sources?

A Because fossil fuels are no longer available.

B Because global warming has increased the amount of sunlight that reaches the earth.

C Because they are free and available worldwide.

D Because conventional energy sources are being depleted, and they cause environmental damage.

Câu hỏi 6 :

According to the passage, how is solar energy production similar to geothermal energy production?

A They both require fairly simple technology.

B They both use heat from the earth’s surface.

C They both require the use of a generator.

D They are both conventional and costly.

Câu hỏi 7 :

According to the passage, which of the following is true about solar power?
