I. Mạo từ trong tiếng Anh

Mạo từ “A” và “An” dùng chỉ những sự vật, hiện tượng cụ thể người nghe không biết, “The” chỉ sự việc cả người nói và người nghe đều biết.

1. Cách sử dụng mạo từ xác định: The

Mạo từ “the” đứng trước danh từ xác định. Danh từ đó đã được đề cập đến trong câu hoặc ngữ cảnh giao tiếp. Vì vậy, người nói và người nghe đều ngầm hiểu rõ đối tượng đang nhắc đến là ai, cái gì.

Ví dụ:

• The girl next to Mark is my sister. (Cô gái đứng cạnh Mark là em gái tôi.)

• I gave him the bike I bought yesterday. (Tôi đã tặng cho anh ấy chiếc xe đạp mới mua hôm qua.)

“The” được sử dụng trong các trường hợp sau:

Mạo từ xác định the đứng trước danh từ chỉ người hoặc vật đã xác định hay đã được đề cập trước đó.

Ví dụ: Did you lock the car? (Bạn đã khóa xe rồi chứ?)

→ Người nghe biết người nói đang đề cập đến người và vật nào, “the car” = your car/our car.

Mạo từ xác định the đứng trước 1 danh từ, danh từ này được xác định bằng một cụm từ hoặc một mệnh đề theo sau.

Ví dụ: What did you do with the camera I lent you? (Bạn đã làm gì với cái máy ảnh mà tôi cho bạn mượn vậy?)

→ “the camera” được xác định bởi mệnh đề I lent you

Mạo từ xác định the đứng trước các danh từ chỉ nơi chốn cụ thể.

Ví dụ: Turn left here for the station. (Rẽ trái tại đây để đến nhà ga.)

Mạo từ xác định the đứng trước danh từ chỉ vật thể là duy nhất, chỉ có một.

Ví dụ: the earth (trái đất), the sky (bầu trời), the sun (mặt trời)

Mạo từ xác định the dùng với một số cụm từ đề cập đến môi trường vật chất.

Ví dụ: the environment (môi trường), the country (đất nước), the weather (thời tiết)

Mạo từ xác định the đứng trước tính từ/trạng từ trong so sánh nhất

Ví dụ: I am the tallest in my family. (Tôi là người cao nhất trong gia đình.)

Mạo từ xác định the đứng trước first, second, third,.. và next, last, same, only

Ví dụ: He was the first person I dated. (Anh ấy là người đầu tiên mà tôi hẹn hò.)

Mạo từ xác định the đứng trước tên ban nhạc hoặc tên tàu thủy.

Ví dụ: The Beatles were an internationally famous British pop group. (Beatles là ban nhạc pop người Anh nổi tiếng thế giới.)

Mạo từ xác định the đứng trước họ của một ai đó, ở dạng số nhiều để chỉ toàn thể gia đình.

Ví dụ: The Johns have lived in this town for over 40 years. (The Johns have lived in this town for over 40 years.)

Mạo từ xác định the + Tính từ (Adj) chỉ 1 nhóm người, động vật hoặc đồ vật với

Ví dụ: the rich (người giàu), the old (người già), the poor (người nghèo)

Mạo từ xác định the + Danh từ số ít (Singular Nouns) chỉ 1 nhóm động vật hoặc đồ vật, 1 loại dụng cụ máy móc, nhạc khí

The tiger is in danger of becoming extinct. (Loài cọp đang có nguy cơ bị tuyệt chủng.

2. Cách sử dụng mạo từ bất định: A

Mạo từ “a” đứng trước danh từ bắt đầu bằng phụ âm (dựa trên cách phát âm). Ngoài ra, trong một số trường hợp, “a” cũng đi với danh từ bắt đầu bằng “u, y, h”.

Ví dụ:

• A chair (một cái ghế)

• A table (một cái bài)

• A uniform (một bộ đồng phục)

Ngoài ra, “a” còn có cách dùng sau:

Mạo từ A + Danh từ bắt đầu bằng “uni” và “eu”

Ví dụ: a university (trường đại học); a union (tổ chức); a eulogy (lời ca ngợi)

Mạo từ A + Thành ngữ chỉ số lượng nhất định

Ví dụ: a couple (một cặp); a lot of (nhiều)

Mạo từ A dùng trong các đơn vị phân số

Ví dụ: a/one third (1/3); a/one fifth (1/5)

Mạo từ A dùng trong các thành ngữ chỉ tỷ lệ, giá cả, tốc độ

Ví dụ: $5 a kilo (5 đô 1 ký); 3 times a day (3 lần 1 ngày)

Mạo từ A + số đếm nhất định, thường là hàng trăm, hàng nghìn

Ví dụ: A hundred(một trăm); A thousand(hàng trăm)

3. Cách sử dụng mạo từ bất định: An

Mạo từ “an” đứng trước danh từ bắt đầu bằng 1 nguyên âm (u,e,o,a,i), dựa trên cách phát âm, không phải cách viết.

Ví dụ:

• An apple: 1 quả táo

• An umbrella: 1 cái ô

• An orange: 1 quả cam

Ngoài ra, “an” còn đứng trước một số từ bắt đầu bằng âm câm trong tiếng Anh, như an heir, an hour… Hoặc đi kèm với các từ viết tắt: An MSc (một thạc sỹ), an S.O.S (1 tín hiệu cấp cứu).
