Van Mieu (The Temple of Literature) was constructed in 1070 during Ly Thanh Tong's dynasty. Its original purpose was to honor Confucius. In 1076, the first university of Vietnam called Quoc Tu Giam (The Imperial Academy), was established within this temple by Emperor Ly Nhan Tong. That's the reason why the complex has the name of Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam up to now. Temple of Literature was built in 1070 under King Le Thanh Tong, while Quoc Tu Giam was started construction at the same time later in 1076, right next to the Temple of Literature. This relic complex is located in the south of Thang Long citadel, in Dong Da district, Hanoi capital. The project has a total area of 54331m2, surrounded by the main streets of the district on four sides, the main gate is adjacent to Quoc Tu Giam street to the south, Nguyen Thai Hoc street to the north, Ton Duc Thang street to the west, and the East borders on Van Mieu Street.
The Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam relic site has a brick wall structure surrounding the entire area, the inside is divided into 5 floors of different architectural spaces, each layer is separated by a thick brick wall. There are three interconnected doors. An overview of the relic complex consists of three main parts: Ho Van, the Temple of Literature worshiping Confucius and Quoc Tu Giam.
Starting from the main door in the south, bordering Quoc Tu Giam street, we see Ho Van located opposite the Temple of Literature, from Ho Van to the other side of the street is the outermost brick wall of the relic area consisting of the Four Pillars. built of brick, the two middle pillars are built high above the image of a clam, the two outer pillars are covered with the image of a phoenix, on both sides are two Ha Ma steles, here is a prince, the count must also dismount from the stele. from one beer to the other, then get on the horse-drawn carriage to continue.
Going inside, the first meeting is the Temple of Literature gate with the middle gate built square and two stories high, the two smaller side gates are symmetrical. occupies almost half the area of the whole population. Going in to meet Dai Trung gate, through this gate, the inner area includes Khue Van Cac located on the outermost, is a square floor with eight roofs, four round doors, is like a place where heaven and earth harmonize, now the image of Khue Van Cac is printed on the VND 100,000 polymer banknote of our country.
Going inside is Thien Quang well, also known as Van Tri, placed in the center, the Doctor's Steles are placed on the right and left sides of the well, each side consists of 41 steles arranged in 2 horizontal rows, each stele is placed on the back. a green stone turtle, engraved with the names of the doctors who passed the exam in each exam period. Going inside again, we will see Dai Thanh gate, inside this includes Dai Thanh area where Confucius temple is located, then meet Thai Hoc gate, inside includes Thai Hoc area, Bell Laurel and Drum Floor is the main hall. the place of study of the martyrs, has trained talents for many dynasties of our country.
