Tet is a national and family festival. It is an occasion for every Vietnamese to have a good time while thinking about the last year and the next year. At Tet, spring fairs are organized, streets and public buildings are brightly decorated and almost all shops are crowded with people shopping for Tet. At home, every is tidied, special food is cooked, offerings of food, fresh water, flowers and betel are made on the family altar with burning joss- sticks scenting the air. First-footing is made when the lucky visitor comes and children are given lucky money wrapped in a red tiny envelope. Tet is also a time for peace and love. During Tet, children often behave well and friends, relatives and neighbors give each other best wishes for the new year.

Tết là ngày hội của dân tộc và gia đình. Đây là dịp để mọi người Việt Nam có một khoảng thời gian vui vẻ khi nghĩ về năm vừa qua và những năm tiếp theo. Vào dịp Tết, các hội chợ xuân được tổ chức, đường phố và các công trình công cộng được trang hoàng rực rỡ và hầu như các cửa hàng đều tấp nập người mua sắm Tết. Trong nhà, mọi thứ đều được dọn dẹp gọn gàng, thức ăn đặc biệt được nấu chín, đồ ăn, nước ngọt, hoa, trầu được bày lên bàn thờ gia tiên với những đốt nhang thơm ngào ngạt. Bước đầu tiên được thực hiện khi khách đến thăm may mắn và trẻ em được lì xì trong một phong bì nhỏ màu đỏ. Tết cũng là thời gian dành cho sự bình yên và yêu thương. Trong ngày Tết, trẻ em thường cư xử tốt và bạn bè, họ hàng, làng xóm dành cho nhau những lời chúc tốt đẹp nhất trong năm mới.

Betel nut also warms people up on cold winter days, alleviates sadness when there is mourning, sadness is shared by relatives, friends, and neighbors. Betel nut is also a show of respect from the next generation to the previous generations, so on the tray of worshiping ancestors of the Vietnamese people are betel nut.
