The ship began to break. The crew left the ship and camped on the frozen ocean. After months of living on broken ice, they were able to sail to dock their lifeboats. In April 1915 they landed on Elephant Island. Shackleton decided to seek help, he tried to return to the island of South Georgia. He and five other men survived the storms and waves 16 meters high in a lifeboat. Upon landing, Shackleton and the two men had to climb for 36 hours to find help, amazingly all 22 men survived. Ernest Shackleton was a famous explorer. He wanted to explore Antarctica and in August 1914 he left England. His crew of 28 sailed on the ship Endurance to the South Atlantic and then to the South Pole. So the crew had to wait on the ship for the ice to melt.
