The Tay, with local groups of Pa di, Tho, Ngan, Phen, and Thu Lao, are one of 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam, the second largest after the Kinh.The Tay people speak Tay, a language belonging to the Thai branch of the Kra-Dai language family.The Tay people live mainly in the lowlands of northern Vietnam. The Tay people used to be called the Tho people (however, this name is now used to refer to the Muong Nghe An people, see the article Tho people). The Tay have the second largest population in Vietnam.The Tay and Nung have their origins and close relationship with the Zhuang people in Guangxi, China.The Tay mainly reside in the northern midland and mountainous provinces. Besides, in recent times, the Tay have also migrated to some Central Highlands provinces such as Dak Lak and Lam Dong.
