Tay Nguyen is an area with plateau topography including provinces ranked in geographical order from the North to the South, including Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Lam Dong. Tay Nguyen is a highland region, bordering Quang Nam province to the north, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan provinces to the east, Dong Nai and Binh Phuoc provinces to the south, and Dong Nai and Binh Phuoc provinces to the west. borders the provinces of Attapeu (Laos) and Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri (Cambodia). Tay Nguyen can be divided into three topographical sub-regions and three climatic sub-regions, including the North Central Highlands (corresponding to Kon Tum and Gia Lai provinces), the Central Highlands (corresponding to Dak Lak and Dak Lak provinces and Dak Nong), South Central Highlands (corresponding to Lam Dong province). Tay Nguyen has a lower elevation and higher temperature than the Northern and Southern sub-regions.

With the characteristics of red basalt soil at an altitude of about 500 m to 600 m above sea level, Tay Nguyen is very suitable for industrial crops such as coffee, cocoa, pepper, and mulberry. Cashew and rubber trees are also being developed here. Coffee is the number one important industrial crop in Tay Nguyen. Tay Nguyen is also the second largest rubber growing area after the Southeast and is exploiting bauxite ore mines. Tay Nguyen is also an area in Vietnam that still has a lot of forest areas with diverse biota, rich mineral reserves that are almost untapped and great tourism potential, the Central Highlands can be considered the roof of the Central region. , has a great protective function. However, deforestation, destruction of natural resources and indiscriminate exploitation of forest products can lead to the risk of forest depletion and environmental and ecological changes.

Confusing geographical location: Currently, many people living in Vietnam confuse the Tay  Nguyen as a separate region, not belonging to any region. However, Tay Nguyen is one of the three sub-regions in Central - Vietnam, or West - Central, including 5 provinces: Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Lam Dong.
