Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh on March 3, 1847, and received his education there as well as in London. Bell traveled to Canada with his family in 1870, then to the United States the following year to teach. There, he pioneered a technique for teaching deaf-mute youngsters called visible speech, which was created by his father. In 1882, he became a naturalized American citizen. Bell had long been intrigued by the notion of conveying voice and, by 1875, had developed a rudimentary receiver capable of converting electrical into sound. Bell received the French Volta Prize for his invention in 1880, and with the money he received, he established the Volta Laboratory in Washington, where he continued his experiments in communication, medical research, and techniques for teaching speech to the deaf, among other things, working with Helen Keller and others. He bought land in Nova Scotia in 1885 and set up a vacation house there, where he continued his experiments, especially in the realm of flying. Bell was a founding member of the National Geographic Society in 1888, and from 1896 to 1904, he served as its president, as well as helping to create its magazine. Bell died in his home in Nova Scotia on August 2, 1922.
