The US Constitution says nothing about political parties, but over time, in fact, in the US developed a two-party system, that is, the Democratic party and the Republican party. Besides these two parties, there are other parties, including the Communist Party and the Socialist Party… Minority parties have also sometimes won positions in lower government, but these parties do not play a large role in national politics. For a long time, these third parties played only a faint role in US presidential campaigns, and still appeared from time to time but almost never had a real chance to dominate the White House. They also rarely compete for a seat in Congress, where, since World War II, hardly more than two of the 535 members of Congress are not Republicans or Democrats. Among those exceptions is Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who was elected to the US Congress as an independent and has entered the Democratic nomination.
