Indeed, as some historians have remarked, it really was the first American war. The principal combatants were the French and the English. And for many of the colonists, the war was the first interaction they had with other British settlers. So, for the first time, Americans from Massachusetts met Americans from Virginia. This became especially true when the land that they won—what was once New France—became land for British use only and not open to colonists. For the first time, the distinct American people became angered at the government of Britain. And the result was that they began to see themselves as something not British but American.
