Jennie was born on January 16, 1996 in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea and is the only child in the family. At the age of 8, she went on a trip with her family to Australia and New Zealand. While in New Zealand, her mother asked her if she liked the place and would like to stay here, to which she replied "Yes". A year later, she was sent to study abroad at Waikowhai Middle School, Auckland, New Zealand and lived in a family home here.

Jennie started listening to K-pop music when she was in New Zealand and she was very interested in YG Entertainment's music.[9] Her mother planned to move her to Florida, USA at the age of 14 so she could become a lawyer or teacher, but she called her mother and cried on the phone to protest against the idea. Jennie thought she might not find a job she liked while living alone in Florida, her family supported her decision and she returned to Korea.
