Many flats in Japan's cities are very small. This is because land in Japan is very expensive. People never wear shoes inside Japanese homes. They always take off their shoes before they enter the house. Then they put on slippers to walk around inside the house. This helps to keep the side of the house clean.
Most Japanese homes have special type of room. They use this room as a living room during the day and at night it comes a sleeping room for visitors.
In Japan, a lot of people now sleep in European style beds, but some people also use a special kind of bed. This is a soft mattress that is put on the floor. In the morning, they roll up and put it into a cupboard. This gives more space in the room.
