Nowadays, living abroad becomes one of the most popular trends for most people in every country over the world. This situation may seem like a fabulous opportunity but there are also many potiental downsides.
Of course, the benefits of studying or working abroad can not be denied. One thing that is of great significance is people can learn another language and immersing themselves in a place where residents speak another tongue is the good way to improve communication skill more fluently. Even if this language is not on study course, it may well come in useful later when they are seeking employment or in their personal life. They may have better study opportunities abroad than they do at home. Moreover, mentioning that they have studied abroad can look very potiental to employers when it comes to apply for jobs. The fact that people have lived and studied abroad shows that they posses valuable workplace qualities such as independence initiative or resilienceand they can be always adaptable if the circumstance demands it and not afraid of any challenge.
In spite of its advantages, some difficulties still remain. Firstly, they may experience cultural shock. Even if they have researched it extensively and think they know clearly the country, they will find lots of things are very different when they actually live there such as social and psychological differences in how people relate to each other and behave reasonably. Futhermore, they may feel alone and without any emotional support from their relatives and friends that they might normally take for granted back in home country. Making and developing friendships takes much time and it can be more difficult in a culture which they are not used to. Besides, it is likely to increase the costs associated with the tuition fee and expense of everyday living. Financial pressures can undermine their overall enjoyment of an experience if they are not careful.
In conclusion, I believe the advantages derived from stirring abroad far outweight than disadvantages if there are a careful preparation. People also more concern about mental and social issues before leaving their hometown to prevent from negative aspects.
Difficulties when studying abroad:
Lack of confidence in English capital
Language barrier is one of the obstacles that make Vietnamese students afraid. At home, many of you are confident with your English ability because you are assessed to have good English speaking ability. However, when in a new country, some of you lose confidence by not communicating well with native speakers.
Difficult to adapt to new environment
Studying abroad is a time when you have to adapt to many new things such as lifestyle, culture, teaching and learning methods. In addition, being away from family and relatives to live with strangers will shock you if you are not prepared and psychologically familiar. Even many international students leave the country because they cannot adapt to the new and stressful environment.
Complicated and cumbersome study abroad procedures
Currently, many study abroad procedures have been relaxed, the visa application, school selection ... becomes easier. However, each country has different regulations, which may change over time, causing a lot of trouble for foreign students.
High cost of studying abroad
The first difficulty of students studying abroad is the cost. If receiving scholarships from Government or non-governmental organizations, international students can partially cover the costs. However, for self-sufficient international students, the cost to cover them is quite large, because tuition fees and living costs abroad are much higher than in Vietnam.
Advantages of studying abroad:
Studying abroad gives you a chance to discover a whole new culture . You will experience the unique climate, food and customs of a new country. This is also an opportunity to learn another language.
Studying abroad seems to bring you an absolute freedom, something many young people dream of. You make more friends and experience new things in life. Self-reliance and personal responsibility are one of the advantages of studying abroad. Shop, cook, clean, and create a sense of responsibility for yourself. These qualities will be useful during your study abroad but also with you for the rest of your life.
Learning styles and curricula vary from country to country. So studying abroad also gives you the freedom to enroll in courses that are not available in your home country. Some places have extremely flexible course structures so you can choose the subjects you like and fit the time you have available to study.
For many people, the biggest benefit of studying abroad may be a graduate degree. That means proving yourself to be an energetic, diligent person who can adapt well to different environments. Studying abroad gives you the opportunity to learn about an issue from different cultures, which gives you a broader perspective than many others. Along with that is confidence and an open mind. In addition, after years of studying abroad, you will have much better communication skills and cultural awareness.
