While Christmas is considered a major holiday in the USA, in Vietnam, Tet is a special occasion to reunite with family and celebrate the arrival of spring. Held from late January to early February, Tet is officially a three-day celebration but it can continue for at least the first week of the lunar new year. In the weeks before Tet, all houses are thoroughly cleaned to remove the bad things of the old year. On these special days, people often display a tray of five fruits on the altar to pay respects to their ancestors and buy peach, apricot or kumquat trees for home decoration. Tet comes, it would be remiss not to enjoy Chung cake - a special dish of Tet. On the last day of the year, all family members often have dinner together and wait for the moment the clock strikes 0 am and fireworks are lit up everywhere to wish good health and happiness in the coming new year. On the first day of the new year, people often go to grandparents, relatives, and villages to wish health, happiness and a happy new year. Children often receive lucky money that their parents and relatives put in red envelopes. On these days, women often go to church and pagoda to pray for the best for the family. In conclusion, Tet is a meaningful and important festival that is always expected by all Vietnamese. It's time for us to have leisurely days with our beloved family.
