Religions of Indian origin such as Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism,[3] are all based on the concept of dharma and karma. Ahimsa, a philosophy of nonviolence, is an important aspect of indigenous Indian beliefs whose most famous proponent was Mahatma Gandhi, whose civil disobedience movement brought India together against British Raj and this philosophy continued to inspire Martin Luther King, Jr. in the civil rights movement in the United States. During the Muslim conquests of the Indian subcontinent, religions of Indian origin were persecuted by Muslim rulers.[4] Muslim rulers massacred Hindus, Jainists, and Buddhists while attacking temples and monasteries, and forced them to convert even on the battlefield.[5] Most of the major temples in the North Indian subcontinent were destroyed during the Islamic period.
