Air pollution is a major problem in the world today. It affects every country and continent, but it is most severe in developing countries. Air pollution has many causes, but it is mainly caused by the release of gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, into the atmosphere. These gases are released when we burn fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas to produce electricity or to power our vehicles. Air pollution also occurs naturally. For example, volcanoes release large amounts of dust and gases into the atmosphere when they erupt. Air pollution can have many consequences for humans and other species on Earth. For example: Air pollution can cause health problems for humans who breathe it in or absorb it through their skin; for example, it can cause heart disease and lung cancer if you breathe in large amounts over a long period of time. Air pollutants can damage crops and food supplies; for example, ash from volcanic eruptions can destroy crops because it blocks sunlight from reaching them through the air. This makes some food crops less nutritious so that they are less healthy for us to eat (for example, they may contain fewer vitamins).  So what can we do to reduce air pollution? Reduce your use of fossil fuels: This includes gasoline for cars and oil for heating homes or powering factories. If you use fossil fuels, try using renewable energy instead like wind or solar power or hybrid vehicles that run on electricity from the grid. You could also convert your car to run on natural gas which is cleaner-burning than gasoline but still produces greenhouse gases when burnt. Or When you do go out in areas with high levels of air pollution, wear a mask that covers both your mouth and nose (some masks only cover the mouth). You can find inexpensive masks at hardware stores or online if needed. Air pollution is a serious issue, and something needs to be done about it. Many countries are working towards solutions, with varying degrees of success. In the end, air pollution is a serious global problem that we can't control alone. We need to work together to find solutions before the problem spirals completely out of control.
