One of the easiest ways to save on your energy bills is to turn off lights and appliances when you're not using them. You should also make sure that they are in good working order. If your refrigerator door doesn't seal properly, for example, you'll be wasting a lot of energy keeping it cool.
Install programmable thermostats and set them to turn down the heat at night or when you're away from home. Make sure you properly insulate your attic and walls so that your heating and cooling systems aren't fighting a losing battle with the outdoors.
Consider replacing older appliances with Energy Star certified models. These use 10-to-50 percent less electricity than older models. Newer dishwashers, for example, can wash a full load using about 4 gallons of water compared to 10 gallons for older models.
