The Nung people, with local groups, are among the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam. The Nung speak the Nung language, which is a Tai language of the Tai-Kadai linguistic family. The Nung people have lived in the northeastern provinces of the North such as Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, Bac Giang, Tuyen Quang. At present, a large amount has migrated to the Central Highlands provinces, mainly in Dak Lak. This migration began in 1954, when the Viet Minh controlled northern Vietnam. The Nung have close relations with the Tay and the Trang people live along the border with China. In China, the Nung along with the Tay are grouped together into the Trang ethnic group. The Nung people in Vietnam have a population of 968,800, making it the 7th largest ethnic group in Vietnam.
