During the legendary Hung Vuong period, Hung Yen belonged to Giao Chi, Du Chien district. Under the Ngo dynasty, called Dang Chau. It was later renamed Thai Binh (the government was an administrative unit) in the Tien Le dynasty, the Dang Chau and the Ly Khoai Chau, the Long Hung (the highway was an administrative unit) and the Tran Dynasty. .
The Nguyen Dynasty implemented administrative reform in 1831, abolished the Tran administrative units and established the provinces. The five districts of Dong Yen, Kim Dong, Thien Thi, Phu Cu and Tien Lu were separated from Khoai Chau district of Son Nam Thuong district and three districts Than Khe, Duyen Ha, Hung Nhan were separated from Tien Hung district of Nam Dinh district .
This area has convenient traffic conditions with communes and markets located next to each other, creating conditions for business activities to be more bustling and crowded. The Chronicle of Hung Yen Province said: "The streets are very busy and bustling, crowded with cars; old pictures of Pho Hien in Son Nam can be seen now in this land".
