There is a generation gap in each family. It’s the different between parents and children, between grandparents and children in lifestyles, in appearance, in hobbies, and in table manners. Parents like casual clothes, children prefer fashionable clothes. Grandparents like folk music while teenagers like pop music. Most of grandparents think that pop music is too noisy while for teenage folk music is very boring. There are different ways to narrow the generation gap. They should have mutual understanding, help each other and share interest.

For thousands of years, Vietnamese families have built up good and sustainable traditions with standards of family etiquette and behavioral ways. However, there are still gaps between generations in the family in terms of awareness, lifestyle and psychology. Therefore, these gaps create inevitable conflicts, especially in adolescents and their parents. My family also went through such conflicts. When I was sixteen years old, the biggest conflict between my parents and me was the difference in the perception of my future career. My parents always set out plans for my future. They chose a career and made me follow it. They forced me to study seriously and had to become a doctor. However, I loved painting and spend a lot of time on that. I wanted to become an artist. They were not satisfied and thought that learning was prioritized, so they cared and created all conditions and rules to achieve their goals. They chose a career for me according to their experience, their thoughts even though the career did not match my abilities and interests. When I disobeyed, they punished me. I couldn't stand it and argued with them. I didn't talk to them about 5 days. Maybe they realized they were wrong after that argument and agreed to let me pursue my passion. They understood me better and helped me pursue my own dreams.
