The Independence Palace bears many names, each with a different historical anecdote. When the French colonialists invaded Saigon, they planned to build the Governor's Palace of Cochinchina and in 1868 was completed and named Palace Norondom. After the Dien Bien Phu victory, Ngo Dinh Diem reclaimed the Palace and renamed it to Independence Palace, rebuilding a new monumental and stronger palace after the Palace collapsed on the left wing.
