First of all, we have machines to help us do everyday tasks such as travelling, housework, studying, and working. In the past, our ancestors have fewer choices including hiring help from people. Furthermore, the internet allows us to solve problems on our own. For example, imagine you get lost in a big city, a quick navigation using a smart phone with internet connection will show you your position and the direction to take to reach the destination. Internet is also a useful means for entertainment with lots of movies, music, books to find. As a result, people have less need to have a friend to spend time with. On the other hand, it is also believed that humans are more dependent on each other now than in the past. One reason is that the work is becoming increasingly specialized, so people need to work in team to combine their ability together to fulfill a task. Before the existence of industry age, most people worked on their own as farmers or sellers, and they had more freedom, control and independence than they do now. Another reason is that life is also more difficult these days with depleted natural resources, higher level of pollution and ever-increasing population. As a result, things are becoming more expensive and people are less self -sufficient. As a result, there is greater dependence toward others. To sum up, modern people are somewhat different from those living in the past in various aspects. While there are contrasting points of view regarding whether we are more or less independent, I still do believe that we are now less independent due to the age of industry and environmental issues.
