Tet is a Vietnamese holiday that is both patriotic and family oriented. It is an opportunity for every Vietnamese to have a wonderful time while reflecting on the previous year and looking forward to the coming year. Spring fairs are held during Tet, streets and public buildings are brightly decorated, and practically every business is packed with Tet shoppers. At home, everything is clean, special cuisine is prepared, and food, fresh water, flowers, and betel offerings are made on the family altar with the aroma of burning joss sticks filling the air. When the lucky guest arrives, the youngsters are handed lucky money wrapped in a red small envelope as the first-footing. Tet is also a holiday dedicated to peace and love.
