Team games involving kicking the ball with one's feet have been played in various parts of the world for thousands of years. A sample of such games includes "Tsu Chu", a Chinese game which was played in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, "Kemari" in Japan, which appeared 500-600 years later and is still played today, the ancient Greek game "Episkyros" and the Roman "Harpastum" . These games had a pronounced ceremonial and symbolic character. In most case the ball was the symbol of the sun whose "capture" would guarantee land fertility and good crops. (2) In ancient China they played a special game for the Emperor's birthday. Soldiers kicked balls made of animal skin into a net between two posts. These posts were ten metres high.(3) The Greeks, for whom ball games were an essential party of life, played a form of football as early as 4 BC. The game was known as Pheninda and involved kicking the ball, running with it and handling it. (4) The Romans followed the Greeks' example and called their game "Hapastum". This was played on a rectangular field, between two teams who defended the lines which marked the ends of the field. The object of the game was to throw the ball from player to player, moving forward all the time, and eventually to throw it beyond the opponents' "goal-line". The defending side was allowed to tackle and kick.(5) There are other examples of early versions of the game evolving elsewhere around the world. In Japan, records show that around the fifth century AD a game called Kemari, which involved eight players ceremonially kicking the ball back to one another across a ground 14 metres square.(6) In Italy a similar game was developed in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries called Calcio( calciare means to kick in Italian) which involved two sides playing in Florence's town square on the feast day of St John the Baptist, the city's patron saint.(7) Football matches played all over Britain. These football matches were very different to today's game. In Scotland the married men played against the unmarried men. The aim was to get the ball back to your team to score an own goal. The ball was carried more than it was kicked. There was no limit. Matches usually lasted from early in the morning until late at night. Games were very violent because there were no rules . Many players broke arm and legs. Some were even killed. That's why English kings in the 1300s and 1400s were trying to outlaw the violent sport. The evolution of the game in England appears to have its roots in holy days. Written evidence confirms that in the twelfth century a game with a ball was played on Shrove Tuesday in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. On such occasions the whole town would get involved and the game could last for days. The purpose of the game was to gain possession of the ball and deliver it back to the town or parish. In many other places, Shrovetide football lasted until the latter half of the nineteenth century.(8) Football, however, was mostly developed in England. From the 8th to the 19th century it had a local character and the rules varied from place to place. At the end of the 19th century, sailors of the English navy introduced Football to the four corners of the earth. The year 1863 marks the beginning in the modern history of Football: The British Football Federation was established. Eight years later, the federation counted 50 club-members.(9) The modern game began in England but interest soon spread around Europe and other countries. The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) was founded in Paris in May 1904 as a recognition of this growth on an international level and is the football world's governing body. The seven founding members were France, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. As Football's worldwide popularity increased, the number of FIFA country-members followed. Today, FIFA counted 204 members. Over 100 years after the formation of the Football Association, football is the most popular sport in the world, played by nearly 250 million people, including 40 million women. The numbers of spectators in the stadiums and of television viewers amounts to billions.(10) Men's Football was introduced as a demonstration sport in the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens. In 1900, football became one of the first team sports included in the Olympic Games. During the Sydney Games, the sport celebrated 100 years of Olympic football. Women's football was introduced at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta
