The Lunar New Year Festival, or Tet, is an important festival in my country and other Asian countries. According to the lunar calendar, this festival celebrates the beginning of the new year in late January or early February. The festival is comprised of three main stages. The family decorates their house with kumquat and peach trees before New Year's Eve. As well as buying clothes for the occasion, they purchase food for family gatherings. The very first moments of another year are celebrated with family and friends by preparing a large meal on New Year's Eve. After eating and drinking until early in the morning, people sing and celebrate. On the first three days of the holiday, people visit their relatives and teachers. It is my favourite festival because it is the only time that all of my family gets together after a hectic year. Furthermore, during Tet I can totally relax and forget all about the troubles of the previous year. We believe that whatever happens during the first days of the Lunar New Year will repeat itself throughout the year in my country. Hence, if we want a successful new year, we have to make sure our most enjoyable festival is prepared carefully.

There have been celebrations to mark the beginning of a new year for thousands of years. Sometimes these were simply an opportunity for people to eat, drink and have fun, but in some places the festivities were connected to the land or astronomical events. For example, in Egypt the beginning of the year coincided with when the River Nile flooded, and this normally happened when the star Sirius rose. The Persians and Phoenicians started their new year at the spring equinox (this is around 20 March when the Sun shines more or less directly on the equator and the length of the night and the day are almost the same).
