Halloween celebration provides people with an opportunity to dress up in a scary manner with strange costumes that we might never wear in daily life. People have a choice where to attend the celebration, go trick-or-treating outside or remain haunted in houses. Every age group has different roles to play in different ways in Halloween. For children, it is the best time of the year to go to strangers’ houses to have candies. Halloween celebration was first established over two thousand years ago by farmers in Celtic Ireland. At first, the Halloween festival was well-known as Samhain by the Celtic farmers which meant the end of summer. Halloween was the time to forget about the summer and hope for a productive winter. Celts believed that October 31st was the specific day when the season of death came into contact with life season and thus allowed dead spirits to rise among the living. During Halloween festival, Celtic farmers gave sacrifices and built big bonfires to chase away dead spirit in hopes for healthy crops in the next following year. Celts wore masks and dress up in skins of animals to masquerade themselves as spirits. The original name was All Hallows Eve, then it was changed into Halloween – the name that we all know nowadays. It was until the nineteenth century when Halloween made its way to the United States of America. The rise of potato famine led to billions of Celtic farmers together with their cultural practices to move to the United States, which resulted in numerous changes in the festival. The animal skins were changed to costumes and Jack-O’-Lanterns were replaced by the big bonfires. However, the festival kept its traditions. Nowadays, Halloween has become more and more popular in the entire world, specifically in the United States of America. To businessmen, Halloween is one of the most profitable festivals of the year. The day generates billions of dollars every year by selling costumes, decorations, candies and even horror movies with themes of Halloween. The Halloween festival has undergone various changes for over two thousand years. Despite all these changes, the basic foundation developed by the Irish farmers has been persisted.
