Tidal wave (or tsunamis) is one of the most disastrous natural disasters. It is commonly known as shallow water wave resulting from the gravitational interactions between the Sun, Moon and Earth. However, it can also be caused by earthquakes, landslides, volcanic explosions, glacier and bolides. In the world, tidal wave occurs mostly in the Pacific Ocean. Japan is the country that has the longest recorded history of tsunamis. Normally, when a tsunami takes place, it will cause thousand deaths, destroy infrastructure, economy and so on. Because of its destructive power, people are trying hard to predict it as precisely as possible. Nevertheless, we still now in great disadvantage when facing with such natural disaster.

A tsunami is a series of waves created when a large volume of ocean water is displaced rapidly on a large scale. Earthquakes and large geological movements above or below the water surface, volcanic eruptions, and meteorite impacts are all capable of causing tsunamis. The disastrous effects of a tsunami can be enormous, killing by submerging hundreds of thousands of people in water for a few hours. The tsunami started at the bottom of the deep sea. When it was still offshore, the wave had a rather small amplitude (the wave height), but the wave length reached hundreds of kilometers. So when we are far from shore, we can hardly recognize it, but only perceive it as a long stretch of dune wave.
