Many children enter the world of television before they even go to school. Research by the kaiser family health care association (English is "kaiser family foundation") shows that:
Two-thirds of babies and toddlers look at screens for an average of 2 hours a day.
Children under 6 years old watch an average of about 2 hours of media a day, mainly TV, video or DVD.
Children and adolescents aged 8 to 18 years spend almost 4 hours a day in front of a television screen and an additional 2 hours with computers (outside of school time) and playing games.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (English for "app") recommends that children under the age of 2 years should not watch any television programs and that children older than 2 years of age should not watch any television programs. watch more than 1 to 2 hours per day.
The first two years of life are considered critical for brain development. Television and other media can interfere with children's process of exploring, playing, and interacting with parents and those around them. These are important activities to help children learn and develop both physically and socially.
As children get older, spending too much time in front of screens affects activities like being physically active, reading, doing homework, playing with friends, and spending time with family.
Of course, watching TV in moderation is a good thing: preschoolers can learn the alphabet on TV shows, elementary school kids can learn about wildlife on nature shows, and Parents can keep up with current events through the evening news program. We cannot deny that television can also be a good educational tool and source of entertainment for all.
But besides the benefits, watching too much TV is also not good:
Children who spend more than 4 hours a day watching television are more likely to be obese.
Children who watch violent TV shows often exhibit aggressive behavior and may always worry that the world is scary and that bad things will happen to them.
Television characters often depict dangerous actions such as smoking and drinking, and reinforce gender differences and ethnic stereotypes.
Child rights defenders have different opinions. Some claim to increase the number of hours per week watching educational programs, others argue that saying no to TV is best. There are also those who say that it is better for parents to control their children's television use and teach them that television is for entertainment, not for escaping reality.
In summary, controlling the content of TV programs that children watch is very important and parents should limit TV viewing time to ensure that children do not spend too much time sitting in front of the television.
