The Tay speak the Tay language, a Thai language belonging to the Tai-Kadai language family. The Tay live mainly in the low mountainous areas of Northern Vietnam. The Tay used to be known as the Turks (however this name is now used to refer to another ethnic group, see the Turks). The Tay has the second largest population in Vietnam. The Tay and Nung people have close origins and a close relationship with the Trang or the Zhang people in China.The Tày people's village is usually at the foot of a mountain or along a stream. The name of the village is often called after the names of hills, fields, and rivers. Each village has from 15 to 20 houses. Large version divided into many small villages.
